Lighting Guide-Infected pg007

Description

This is an example of a basic lighting guide that I submit with the original work to the colorist.

Unlike the ink washed sections of the book, which have light and shadow already built in, these parts of the book, representing the POV of uninfected people, rely heavily on the colorist to add the lighting atmosphere. Obviously, he isn't a mind reader, and after some trial and error, we have arrived at this as a solution to give him an idea of the lighting I am looking for.

To make it, I just add a layer in PS, fill it with black and turn it to multiply. Then it's just a matter of roughly adding in the light with white or the eraser tool. When I'm done, I combine the layers, make a lower resolution jpeg(no need for 100mb files for reference guides) and send it off with the line art.

Still looking for some refinement/streamlining of the process, 120+ pages of lighting guides, even in this fairly basic form, can add quite a lot of hours to a project.

This page...meh, it's not one of my better ones. Throughout this four page sequence, I tried to stay away from any empathetic close ups, I didn't want the reader to know who to root for, who the protagonist was for the scene, adding a bit of shock when one of the agents is abruptly killed. I still couldn't help but hint at it with some quasi over the shoulder shots, though. It works, but it's clunky storytelling.

This is actually a great idea/exercise. I think I'll adopt it, in order to have the colors feel the mood of the page, better.
